Uncommon Carrier is a Smartway Transport Partner in Sustainability
As a Smartway Transport Partner, Uncommon Carrier manages our logistics operations in an environmentally responsible way, in cooperation with the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (USEPA’s) Office of Transportation and Air Quality, Transportation and Climate Division. SmartWay is a partnership among the U.S. government, businesses and consumers to protect our environment, reduce fuel consumption, and improve our air quality for today and generations to come. Membership is voluntary and reflects our community values and commitment to sustainability.
SmartWay’s goals are to achieve improved fuel efficiency and reduce environmental impacts from freight transport. Partnership members are encouraged to improve fuel savings and reduce emissions in several ways. Freight carriers maintain their truck fleet with various fuel saving technologies and by reducing idling time. Other possible strategies include:
- Wind deflectors on the tops, sides, and rear of trucks, to reduce aerodynamic drag
- Fuel-efficient tires and tire inflation systems to reduce rolling resistance
- Idle reduction equipment to power and cool the cab while the truck is not in motion, allowing the engine to be shut off
- Use of speed governors
- Use of hybrid powertrain systems, especially for urban operation trucks
SmartWay identifies products and services that reduce transportation-related emissions, and consists of transportation programs that are designed to result in significant air quality and greenhouse gas improvements while improving current levels of other emissions and pollutants. The partnership’s aim is to eliminate more than 33 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year, up to 200,000 tons of nitrous oxide emissions per year, and reduce large amounts of particulate matter.
Uncommon Carrier has been a Smartway Partner since 2008.
